Remove a password from a PDF
A PDF that asks for a password every time you open it gets tiresome once it is safely on your own computer, and some programs refuse to merge, print or edit a protected file at all. Unlocking writes a copy of the document with its password removed, so it opens straight away everywhere. You need to know the password: type it in, and we use it to open the file and save it again without encryption. This tool does not guess, crack or bypass passwords. If the password is wrong, it tells you so and nothing else happens. The work is done in your browser. Your document is never uploaded, and neither is the password you type: both stay on this device. The pages, text, images and links are copied across unchanged. The tool works on PDF files up to 50 MB. It also removes printing, copying and editing restrictions from a file that opens without a password, and for those you do not need to type anything.

Frequently asked questions
- Can this open a PDF when I do not know the password?
- No. It removes a password you already know and type in. A tool that removed passwords it was not given would be a tool for opening other people's documents.
- Is my password sent to your servers?
- No. The file is decrypted in your browser, so neither the document nor the password leaves your device.
- My PDF opens without a password but will not let me print or copy. Can this help?
- Yes. Leave the password field empty and press Unlock PDF. You can already read everything in such a file, so the restrictions are removed without asking for anything, and the copy can be printed, copied and edited freely.
- Why is there a 50 MB limit?
- Our other tools send files over 50 MB to our servers. Doing that here would mean sending your password too, so this tool stays in your browser and keeps to what a browser can handle.
