Add page numbers to a PDF
Documents that were merged, scanned or exported from a slide deck usually arrive with no page numbers at all, and a reader who cannot say "see page nine" has to describe the page instead. This adds them. Choose which corner or edge they sit in, whether each page reads 1, Page 1, or 1 of 10, and which number the first page carries, which is what you want when a report continues from another document. Numbering can skip the cover: name the pages that should be numbered and the rest are left exactly as they are. The work happens in your browser, so the file is never uploaded and nothing is re-encoded — the numbers are drawn onto the pages you already had, at a size you choose, half an inch from the edge so a printer will not cut them off.

Frequently asked questions
- Is my file uploaded to a server?
- No. The numbers are drawn in your browser, so the document never leaves your device.
- How do I leave the cover page unnumbered?
- Enter the pages that should be numbered, such as 2-12. Page 1 is left untouched and the numbering starts on page 2.
- What does the total in "1 of 10" count?
- The pages you numbered. If you skip a cover in a ten page document, the first numbered page reads 1 of 9, because nine pages carry a number.
- Can I start from a number other than 1?
- Yes. Set the first number to whatever you need, which is how a second volume carries on from the first.
- Will the numbers cover the existing text?
- They are drawn half an inch from the edge, where most documents have a margin. On a page with no margin at all they can overlap, so check the result before you print a long run.
